SIU School of Medicine students officially kicked off our gardening season on March 12th. This volunteering activity was a key component of Physician Community Advocacy Day, an initiative shaped by Dr. Kelly Hurst, the Year 4 Clerkship Director at SIU SOM. We would like to extend a special thanks to Cathy Villard, our Community Outreach volunteer, whose leadership enabled the students to complete multiple projects in less than three hours.
This day serves as a vital part of the SIU SOM Medical Humanities curriculum, allowing students to explore social responsibility and the factors that shape health beyond clinical settings. By engaging with the Motherland Community Project, these future physicians see firsthand how health is influenced by neighborhoods, food systems, and public policy.
Following this successful kickoff, we will be hosting a two-hour on-site gardening class for SIU students and community members this April. This initiative is organized in collaboration with the SIU Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group, co-founded by neurology student Justin Harris. We will provide a sign-in link and further training details shortly.
